Sometimes, a record refers the reader back to a previous record, but does not mention the information directly itself. For example, an entry might say 'Fred Bloggs Labourer his son'.
In cases like these, the entry is usually implying that Fred's father is the entry above. Where it is obvious who is being referred to, their name or record number has been inserted into the database entry in square brackets. For example, 'Fred Bloggs Labourer his [ABC-123-45] son'.
You can then cut-and-paste the record number into the search form, which will locate the record being referred to.
