BRIDGNORTH RELIGIOUS & USEFUL KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY.
This Society has commenced its winter campaign.—On Monday and Tuesday Evenings last, Mr. E. Wheeler, of London, delivered two very interesting Lectures on Astronomy; owing to the very unfavourable state of the weather the audience was more limited than we could have wished, but those who did attend must have been much gratified with the very able and learned manner with which he treated his subject,—showing evidently a deep research in a science which is forever presenting some new feature for wonder and consideration.—These we understand will be followed by a lecture on English Charities, by the Rev. J. B. Owen, who is so well known as a successful lecturer that every one must necessarily expect a treat. And as if the Society were determined to provide an unexceptionable bill of fare, we find the names of Mr. John Hay, of Brewood, and the Rev. J. Miller, of Birmingham, announced to lecture, the one, upon the great founder of England’s greatness, the cake-burning Alfred,—The other, on some no doubt equally interesting subject, which is at present unannounced. To conclude the program, the Head-master of the Grammar School has promised his efficient help to the Society in the way of an lecture in February; by which time a News-room will have been added to its other advantages.
MECHANICS INSTITUTION. - The winter Lectures in connexion with this valuable Society will commence very shortly.
